Tonga police and Education Ministry probe school beating video

1:42 pm on 10 April 2013

The Tongan Police Commissioner says police are working with the Ministry of Education to determine what action needs to be taken regarding a video that appeared on the internet.

The 19-minute recording shows a male prefect beating junior boarders at Tonga College with a stick over a missing cellphone.

The Commissioner Grant O'Fee says the video, which was filmed in 2011, has only just come to police attention, and they are working with the Ministry to establish what happened.

"I don't think it will take that long as far as ascertaining exactly what happened. It's pretty clear cut what happened, it's there for everyone to see. But it's just a case of working with education to see what policies they have got and what the exact legal situation is. Because it's not quite as simple, we need to enquire as to what authority, if any, the prefects had and then just take a balanced view from there."

Grant O'Fee says he is unsure at this stage whether anyone will be prosecuted over the video.
