A representative of the Aboriginal and South Sea Islanders says they are lobbying for the collective to join the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
The ASSI group represents the descendants of those islanders who were blackbirded to work on Australian plantations in Queensland.
The Daily Post reports that an Australian senate candidate for the Katter's Party, Les Muckan, is in Port Vila to lobby the Vanuatu Chiefs and Government to lend support in their bid to join the MSG.
He has sought assistance from Vanuatu's Prime Minister in their cause, also seeking to have dual citizenship and be recognised as citizens of Vanuatu.
Mr Muckan, who is reportedly a high chief of Shefa Province after he was bestowed the chiefly title of Maurongoana in 2009 says that as well as being Aboriginal, he is partly from Erromango in Southern Vanuatu and Lifou in New Caledonia.
