Samoan opposition calls for extra allowances for teachers

8:45 am on 11 April 2013

The opposition Tautua Samoa party has called on the government to provide extra allowances on top of teachers' salaries.

The party leader, Palusalue Faapo II says teachers are leaving the profession to join other government departments because of higher pay.

He says teachers only earn about 10,000 US dollars a year, but with the same qualification, they can nearly double that working for other ministries.

Palusalue says additional allowances will attract university graduates to the industry and help ease a shortage of teachers in Samoa.
