Commonwealth, Forum ministers in Fiji

7:13 am on 12 April 2013

A two member team from the Commonwealth Secretariat is in Fiji on a fact finding mission ahead of a meeting of the Ministerial Action Group later this month in London.

The team head Shennia Spillane says they are assessing the environment in view of the current political developments.

Ms Spillane would not say who they have spoken with but the United Front for a Democratic Fiji reports it told the Commonwealth team the regime's draft constitution will not allow a return to democratic and constitutional rule.

The Commonwealth visit comes as the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group prepares to meet in Fiji.

The group is led by New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully and includes representatives from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

It is tasked by Forum leaders to continue dialogue and engagement with Fiji which remains suspended from the regional agency.
