Fiji AG says constitution draft dumped to avert chaos

1:16 pm on 15 April 2013

Fiji's Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum says there would have been chaos if the Constitution Commission's draft document had gone through.

He says provisions allowing decrees to be changed would have caused economic and social problems.

Sally Round has been at an explanatory session on the government's draft constitution in Nadi.

"About 100 people turned up to hear more details of the proposed constitution. The mostly senior male audience was made up of business people, villagers and some former politicians. Mr Sayed Khaiyum emphasised the achievements of the current government as he went through the draft provisions. He gave examples of how the document relates to real life and said it was aimed at creating a culture of accountability. Mr Sayed Khaiyum said the draft had not been done for the purposes of Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama who has announced he will stand for election in 2014."
