Cook Islands port development already having a positive impact

3:09 pm on 15 April 2013

The Asian Development Bank and the Cook Islands Government will tomorrow officially open the upgraded Avatiu Port on Rarotonga.

The Financial Secretary for the Cook Islands Ministry of Financial and Economic Management, Richard Neves says the project has already boosted the safety and efficiency of the country's port operations.

Avatiu is the country's principal international port, handling 90 percent of its seaborne freight.

The ADB says the project involved making the port less vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather and widening the entrance to allow larger vessels to berth.
