Cricket Fiji says it remains hopeful of convincing national captain Joe Rika to reverse his retirement plans.

The 25 year old announced he would put down his bat at the end of the World Cricket League 7 tournament in Botswana, which finished at the weekend.

Cricket Fiji chairman Isireli Temo Veitokiyaki says Rika has been a vital part of the national set-up for the past nine years and they hope he will reconsider his decision.

"I think after this tournament, when things have cleared up a little, we will probably need to sit down and look at things. He's only a very young man by comparison to some of the guys we had to bring into this tournament. Guys like Joe and any other person with the calibre that he has, retiring early is a waste of talent and resources for any game."
