Political parties in French Polynesia are analysing the results of yesterday's first round of the territorial election as they have less than two days to lodge lists for the run-off round on May the 5th.
The Tahoeraa Huiraatira of Gaston Flosse, which has won 40 percent of the vote, says it won't enter into any coalition with the two other pro-autonomy lists eligible for inclusion in the second round.
The publisher of the Tahiti Pacifique monthly, Alex du Prel, says Mr Flosse persuaded voters that the territory's steep economic decline was due to the policies of the President, Oscar Temaru, whose Union For Democracy suffered big losses.
"Mr Flosse has explained that 'if you want to get rid of Oscar, you don't spread your votes out on al these little parties. We got to be strong on the second round to push him out and make sure he has the least possible seats in the assembly."
Alex du Prel says with the bonus seats available for the winning list in the run-off, an overwhelming majority of assembly members who are likely to be elected are opposed to independence from France.
