Fiji Attorney General denies party gagging claims

11:15 am on 25 April 2013

Fiji's Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum says political parties are not being gagged.

There have been complaints from political groups and regime critics that the regime is making political party registration difficult, amounting to gagging.

Mr Sayed Khaiyum says political party registration is not his job but that of the Registrar of Political Parties.

He says once groups submit their applications to the registrar he follows the rules.

"They've been given a right to respond, and if it's silly or if it's something that should not be considered they need to write back and tell the registrar of political parties."

Mr Sayed Khaiyum says there will be no more amendments to the rules on politcal parties.
