Nauru MPs to debate motion to dissolve parliament

8:40 am on 26 April 2013

Nauru MPs, who have been at loggerheads for months, are to meet today, and are expected to debate a bid by the President Sprent Dabwido to dissolve the parliament to allow an early election.

A new Speaker was elected yesterday, the former cabinet minister, Godfrey Thoma, winning by two votes from Baron Waqa.

Last week two parliamentary sittings were stymied by the lack of a quorum, and earlier this week proceedings were held up when no one put their name forward to be Speaker.

Parliament has not held a regular meeting since early February when the government lost its majority after two cabinet ministers resigned.
