PNG day of mourning planned over violence against women

An American preacher has organised a national day of mourning on May the 15th to highlight violence against women in Papua New Guinea.

Stephen Michael Leach says recent cases of sorcery-related murder and rapes have caused widespread outrage in PNG.

The newspaper, The National, reports that Mr Leach is trying to stage a mass sit-in at Parliament on the day to express the grief at the situation for women in PNG.

Last week, protestors in Madang presented two petitions to the national and provincial governments calling for stern measures to be taken against perpetrators of violence.
