Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, says he has declared war on escalating law and order problems which have recently brought international condemnation.
The newspaper, The National, says the cabinet has discussed the issue and has prepared legislation for the next session of Parliament starting in two weeks.
The proposed legislation includes the death penalty; life sentences without parole for people convicted of rape; the repeal of the controversial Sorcery Act; 20 years for breaches of liquor laws and making homebrew and a jail term of up to 50 years for drug-related offences.
Mr O'Neill says the agenda also proposes building a jail for high risk prisoners on an isolated island.
