Call for animal services in American Samoa

The co-founder of an American Samoa pet lovers organisation says there is a big need for animal services in the territory.

The organisation Alofa Mo Meaola recently spayed, neutered and conducted health check-ups for about 150 dogs and cats, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture which has not had a vet for almost a year.

The co-founder, Moana King says Hawaiian veternarians conducted 100 animal animal check-ups in the territory in February and the Department of Agriculture already has a list of 200 people who have signed up their pets for appointments in June.

She says a local lawmaker Larry Sanitoa recently sought the organisation's help in tackling a stray dog problem.

"Now that we have so many people that are interested in animals, it's going to be a little difficult to do an eradication programme because there are so many animals that are owned. Somehow we need to come up with a plan and work together with the government and our group and just any other group that wants to help out so we can try to figure out this problem."
