Underperforming American Samoan students in the spot light

7:37 pm on 16 May 2013

The American Samoa governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, has called for input from directors to improve the performance of high school students.

Lolo, a former teacher, says educators have known for a long time there is a big gap in terms of student performance in American Samoa compared with other parts of the US.

But he says this information has never been made public.

"We have never publicised this information for some reasons. I guess we did not want the public to know how our children were performing. But as far as I know the gap is getting to be a bigger and bigger gap in terms of performance."

Lolo Matalasi Moliga says improving students' performance requires a collective effort by everyone.
