The former Northern Marianas attorney general, Edward Buckingham, has appeared in court in the US state of Colorado.

Mr Buckingham was arrested on Wednesday night, Colorado time, by police acting on an arrest warrant issued by the Superior Court in Saipan.

He is wanted by CNMI authorities after he fled the territory last year to avoid being served a penal summons on several criminal charges filed by the Office of the Public Auditor.

A spokesperson for the Jefferson County District Attorney's office, Pam Russell, says Mr Buckingham made a brief appearance in court on Thursday where he was granted bail.

"During the course of his appearance this morning, he was given a bond amount of 25 thousand dollars cash and he has posted the 25 thousand dollar cash bond this afternoon and is being released. But at the end of the hearing the judge did order his next appearance date would be June 10th at 8 o'clock in the morning."

Pam Russell says her office has spoken to officials in the CNMI about the possible extradition of Mr Buckingham.
