The World Bank says the introduction of high speed broadband in Tonga will help boost foreign investment in the country.
An 826 kilometre underwater fibre optic cable will be installed between Tonga and Fiji next month, and high speed internet will be available by early July.
A spokesperson for the World Bank, Frank Koloi, says the Tonga government hopes the upgrade will enhance business, and it is planning marketing strategies to attract investors, particularly in the call centre sector.
He says there is already one call centre in Tonga and two more from America will be established once the high speed internet is rolled out.
"What they're simply doing is diverting their calls from America or from Japan simply because Tonga's accent is much more neutral than some of the other call centres around the world. Not only that, our labour costs and the low cost of operating a call centre in Tonga is starting to attract investors."
Frank Koloi says the 34 million US dollar project is funded by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Tonga Communications Corporation.
