Former Tonga PM fails to get judicial review

Tonga's Chief Justice has rejected an application from former prime minister, Lord Feleti Sevele and former transport minister, Paul Karalus, for a judicial review of the report issued by a special parliamentary committee.

Matangi Tonga reports chief justice Michael Scott found the Supreme Court lacked the jurisdiction to review the internal proceedings of the legislative assembly.

Lord Sevele and Mr Karalus had claimed their reputations were damaged by the report into how a multi-million dollar loan, provided by China, and intended for the reconstruction of Nuku'alofa, was spent.

Chief Justice Scott says if the applicants have been unfairly and unjustly treated then that is a cause of regret and something the House may wish to put right.
