The government in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville has declared May the 17th as Bougainville Day.

The Post Courier says the President, Dr John Momis, made the announcement during a commemoration service in Arawa last Friday.

It will gazetted in the Government's calendar to remember the estimated 20,000 people who died during the Bougainville civil war.

The declaration of the official day is expected to be made during the next parliamentary sitting.
