American Samoa schools could combine in bid to save costs

The American Samoa governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga is thinking of consolidating small schools as part of a possible cost-saving measure for the government.

Lolo made the revelation at last week's cabinet meeting where he told directors of the Department of Education that it's time to take a serious look at a number of issues including classroom learning.

In the Manu'a island group, Lolo says there are only about 80 students at Faleasao Elementary School while Fitiuta Elementary has an enrollment of 75. He says the cost to maintain those schools are high.

He says the electricity cost to maintain one school is around 7000 to 8000 US dollars a month and that's a lot of money to educate 75 students, if the government factors in other costs.

Lolo says the Department needs to make changes and not maintain the status quo.
