Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, has revealed that the country's first isolated maximum security prison will be built on Manus.

He says that as part of the Government's efforts to detain high risk offenders and address jail breakouts, a prison will be built on one of the province's isolated islands which is only accessible by plane.

The newspaper, The National, reports the facility will be the first privately-run maximum security facility in the country.

He commended the Manus provincial government for accepting the government's request to have the prison in their province.
