Concern in American Samoa about inmates' outing

6:46 pm on 30 May 2013

Concerns have been raised in American Samoa after two men jailed for violent crimes were seen attending family events.

Samoa News reports it has received numerous calls about inmate Mike Agasiva attending the graduation ceremony for his daughter.

Agasiva is serving a five-year prison term for assault.

Another inmate, Akeki Manu, who is also serving a sentence for assault, was at his daughter's wedding ceremony.

The acting police commissioner, Leseiau Laumoli, says the police commissioner and the jail warden have the authority to allow inmates to attend family functions, so long as they are escorted by police.
