8:52 am on 6 June 2013

Governors of American Samoa and Indonesia's North Sulawesi Province have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a partnership and sister-city arrangement.

Lolo Matalasi Moliga and Governor Sinyo Harry Sarundajang met in Pago Pago to agree on mutual benefits for tourism and culture, trade and investment, agriculture, environment, infrastructure, renewable energy, education, youth and sports.

North Sulawesi is one of 7 archipelagic provinces in Indonesia with a population of 2.2 million.

Mr Sarundajang says the sister city arrangement creates history.

"This partnership will then encourage more collaboration and increase the mutual relationship between Indonesia and the United States of America. I hope there will be an action plan created very soon after the signing ceremony."
