Vanuatu tiff over alleged motion signatures

3:11 pm on 7 June 2013

Vanuatu's opposition leader, Ham Lini, has warned the prime minister, Moana Carcasses, against threatening parliamentarians who exercise their rights.

Mr Lini says it is a joke that Mr Carcasses demanded that police investigate members of parliament.

He says the prime minister is unsure of his numbers but should understand that signatures on any supposed motion can only be withdrawn on the floor of parliament and not by a police investigation.

There were allegations this week that the opposition has circulated a motion against Mr Carcasses, but three government back bencher have been on Radio Vanuatu to deny they signed any motion against him.

They also said they were surprised to see their signatures on the opposition motion.
