Fiji's NFP says United Front best strategy for now

Fiji's National Federation Party says it could fight the next election as part of a coalition of political parties.

The newly registered party met for the first time at the weekend and its president Raman Singh says it agreed to continue working with other parties under the umbrella grouping, the United Front for a Democratic Fiji.

He says the NFP is a stronger force if it works with other members of the Front, which include Labour and the Social Democratic Liberal Party known as SODELPA.

"Basically all parties are minorities except for SODELPA which should gain a fair number of seats so it's best to combine together and become a force even before the constitution is promulgated, especially when you look at the last election results, I think all those parties combined got 95 percent of the vote."

Raman Singh says the United Front is trying to get more involvement from the grassroots to put pressure on the regime but fear is preventing people from coming out in great numbers.
