2:30 pm on 17 June 2013

Community leaders in the Dei district of Papua New Guinea's Western Highlands Province are refusing to hand over to police an 18-year-old woman who beheaded her father with a bush knife after he allegedly raped her repeatedly.

The Post Courier reports that the father of four, said to be in his mid-40s, raped his daughter through the night last Tuesday while her mother was away visiting relatives.

Pastor Lucas Kumi of Rang and other Rolna community leaders told media in Mt Hagen the man wanted to rape her again in the morning and so the woman decapitated him.

They say the incident is the first of its kind in their community and the daughter was reacting to the evil actions of her father and resulting trauma.

They say they all agree that she remain in the community because he deserved to die.
