Samoa Air's pay-by-weight scheme to go international

The chief executive of Samoa Air says the company is planning to offer flights to Australia, New Zealand and the United States within the next six to 12 months.

The airline, which flies within Samoa and to neighbouring American Samoa, introduced a pay-by-weight scheme in April, which Chris Langton says is working better all the time.

He says Samoa Air aims to apply the scheme to a reasonably large international jet in the not-too-distant future but there has also been a huge amount of interest from other international airlines.

"We'd like to think that we're going to be the first to do it but we're only a small airline at the moment, we have some projectives to be in the international, certainly within the next two years, but there are other people out there who are adventurous enough to be looking at this pretty seriously and seeing how they can get their foot in the door."

Chris Langton says there have been numerous occasions on international flights when overloading has significantly compromised the performance of the aeroplane.
