4:45 am on 19 June 2013

New Caledonia is poised to abolish tolls on the motorways in the Noumea area.

The president of the southern province, Cynthia Ligeard, says the administration's finances are in good shape and the tolls can be dropped from the beginning of next year.

The tolls have been charged since 1980, currently netting about 18 million US dollars a year.
