Solomons PM hails MSG as stabilising force

7:06 pm on 19 June 2013

The Solomon Islands prime minister says the Melanesian region has the potential to bring about stability in the Pacific.

Gordon Darcy Lilo made the comment ahead of the summit of the Melanesian Spearhead Group in New Caledonia.

The gathering will see the handover of the chairmanship to the FLNKS Movement's Victor Tutugoro after it was held by the Fiji regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Mr Lilo says the MSG has great potential.

"You cannot continue to rely on aid assistance as a way to stabilise the Pacific. It has to be developped between the Pacific. And the region that has the potential to bring about that kind of more dynamic development that will stabilise the Pacific region is the Melanesian region."
