American Samoa still awaiting hacked funds wired to Vietnam

American Samoa is still trying to recover 1.2 million US dollars taken from a government account and transferred to Vietnam two years ago.

There has been no official explanation of how an alleged hacker got access to the government computer system to wire the money from an account with the Bank of Hawaii to the Vietnam International Bank.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigations stopped the funds from being withdrawn in Vietnam.

The attorney general reportedly has to file action with the High Court to validate legally that the money belonged to the American Samoa government.

Our correspondent says the move is apparently necessary before the Vietnamese government returns the money.
