Female PNG prison staff told to stop having sex with inmates

The Papua New Guinea Correction Services Commissioner Martin Balthazar has warned female officers to stop having sex with prisoners.

Mr Balthazar made the comment after reports that the recent escape of a notorious criminal William Kapris and two convicts was made possible by a female officer, adding that several other female staff members have been involved in sex scandals.

He has told the Post Courier newspaper that while the Correction Service has the second most highly paid public servants, it is no place for women who have no ethical morals and show no commitment to their oaths.

He says many of the female officers are good, but a few have destroyed the image of the organisation.

He says as a result, it could stop recruiting women in the future.

Meanwhile, police have increased to 90,000 US dollars the bounty offered for information leading to the recapture of Kapris.

Police say they have good leads but the two escapees were moving fast due to people helping them.

Three people have so far been arrested and are behind bars for aiding and abetting the escapees.
