Emergency declaration at CNMI hospital extended

1:38 pm on 1 July 2013

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas' state of emergency for the Healthcare Corporation has been extended to ensure it complies with United States health and safety levels.

The Governor, Eloy Inos, made the order to extend the period for 30 days, saying it is in order to protect the health and safety of citizens and visitors.

To ensure the suspension of regulatory provisions does not lead to financial abuse, the emergency declaration also incorporates the March 2012 Memorandum of Understanding between the Healthcare Corporation and the Department of Finance and the Office of the Attorney General.

The order also paves the way for the reprogramming of funds.

Last year, the healthcare corporation was told it was ineligible for Medicare/Medicaid payments, and it would face other penalties if deficiencies were not fixed.
