Vanuatu PM to review minister's copra subsidy decision

3:20 pm on 1 July 2013

The Vanuatu Prime Minister has indicated he may review the decision of the minister of trade and commerce to hike the copra price.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reports Moana Carcasses has removed responsibility for copra subsidies from the hands of the minister and politicians responsible.

The minister Marcellino Pipite came under fire from copra buyers last month when he raised the minimum price for copra while denying their claims that large sums were owed in overdue subsidies.

The buyers claimed the government had not paid subsidies since late last year and was running out of funds.

The Daily Post reports the Prime Minister's Director-General Simeon Athy said yesterday certain government spending decisions will need to be revised, suggesting the government did not have the funds to cover new expenses.

It is expected the copra price will be included.
