A lawyer in Papua New Guinea has been jailed for nine months after been convicted of contempt of court.

It is thought to be the first time that a lawyer in PNG has been jailed for contempt of court.

Emmanual Mai pleaded guilty to the charge.

He had failed to comply with a court order to pay a sum of more than 300 thousand US dollars, together with any interest earned, into a law firm's trust account.
