StarKist cannery wants lower power costs in American Samoa

The owners of the StarKist Samoa tuna cannery have asked the American Samoan government for cheaper electricity.

The President and CEO of the cannery's parent company, Sam Hwi Lee, says other tuna producing countries offer cheaper rates.

He said a lowering of power rates is necessary to keep the cost of producing a can of tuna down.

Mr Lee compared American Samoa's power rate to that of Ecuador.

"Ecuadorean electricity rate is one third of Samoa, not 10 percent below. So think about operation costs, to continue to run freezers, we're talking about lots of electricity."
