With a little over a month before the start of the new fiscal year, the Northern Marianas House of Representatives has rejected the Senate's 123 million US dollar budget bill.
This move has triggered the convening of a six-member committee - three from each chamber - to overcome their differences.
If a budget is not passed and signed into law by September the 30th, the government faces the risk of a shutdown from October the 1st.
