American Samoa utility decides against water rates increase

10:23 am on 28 August 2013

The American Samoa Power Authority is not going ahead with a rate increase for water, waste water and solid waste.

The increase was in the rate plan approved by the previous Power Authority board and was to go into effect on October the first.

An executive director for the Authority, Utu Abe Malae says the new board has approved a resolution to cancel the rate increase.

Mr Malae says the expected revenue from the rate hike was 644-thousand US dollar.

He explained that the cancellation is possible because the Power Authority is making improvements in efficiency, such as outsourcing solid waste collection.
