The new President of Fiji's Methodist Church Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu has directed all church ministers to stop smoking.

Reverend Waqairatu announced the decision at the church's Annual General Meeting in Suva.

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports that he's also directed a ban on the consumption of kava at homes of church ministers and elsewhere.

The Church President also told conference delegates he will be visiting churches around the country to see if ministers have complied with his directives.

He says any church minister that does not comply will be sacked.
