Queensland miner discovers world's largest gas fields off PNG

A Queensland mining magnate Clive Palmer says he has discovered one of the world's largest gas fields off Papua New Guinea.

He says his privately owned company, Palmer Petroleum, has found the offshore field in the Gulf of Papua, to the west of Port Moresby.

Mr Palmer says it could be worth more than 35 billion US dollars and is potentially one of the world's largest gas fields.

He says his company spent more than 50 million dollars exploring an area of more than 3000 square kilometres.

PNG is already developed a huge gas field in Hela province, while there has a separate find in the Gulf of Papua, and other land based gas finds in the country.
