Fiji Labour Party doubts constitution will be out this month

The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says he doubts the new constitution will be ready by the end of the month as promised by the Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The constitution was supposed to be released last month, after the regime originally decreed it had to be finalised in March.

Mr Chaudhry says Commodore Bainimarama wants a constitution that suits the regime's own agenda.

However, he says it should be broadly acceptable to the people of Fiji.

"We cannot raise any confidence in the Bainimarama administration because what they want is a constitution that suits their own agenda not the people of Fiji."
