Fiji union lodges complaint over sugar worker death

3:13 pm on 14 August 2013

A union representing sugar workers in Fiji says it has lodged a criminal negligence complaint with the Fiji police over the death of a sugar worker last month.

The Fiji Sugar and General Worker's Union earlier called for a thorough investigation into an industrial accident at the Lautoka mill that led to the death of Samuela Sigatokacake.

Mr Sigatokacake suffered burns to 60 percent of his body when part of a vessel containing hot liquid collapsed.

The General Secretary of the union, Felix Anthony, says there is no sign police have started investigations and he says the Police Commissioner should act without delay.
