PNG Prime Minister re-opens High Commission in NZ

4:10 pm on 8 August 2013

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has officially re-opened his country's High Commission chancery in New Zealand.

The chancery, which has special heritage building status in Wellington, has been closed for the past two years while significant renovations including strengthening for resistance to earthquakes were undertaken.

Johnny Blades reports.

"Peter O'Neill likened the extensive rebuild of the High Commission to his government's attempts to rehabilitate PNG's public institutions as accountable agencies serving the people's interests. He gave credit to the work of High Commission staff and especially the High Commissioner, William Dihm, who was recently appointed as secretary of the Foreign Affairs department. Earlier in the day Mr O'Neill spoke at Victoria University and stressed the importance of strengthening ties with New Zealand. PNG has signed a memorandum of understanding with Victoria to promote educational co-operation and training in New Zealand of Papua New Guineans, which the Prime Minister says will help his country's key development goals."
