Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says his government is doing what it can to assist Fiji on a path to free and fair elections next year.

PNG's government recently announced it would provide over 11 million US dollars to assist Fiji prepare for elections in 2014.

However, non-government political parties in Fiji have voiced concern that the Melanesian Spearhead Group is the only international organisation invited by Fiji's regime to send an observer mission for the election.

Mr O'Neill says it's PNG's job as a responsible regional country to make sure elections in Fiji are free and fair.

"And I am certain that the current government of Fiji makes sure that happens. We have been invited to be observers of that election process. We have accepted that and we will participate in making sure that it is done according to the expectations of a democratic process that we are all used to."
