NZ business keen on PNG PM's visit

The New Zealand Papua New Guinea Business Council says this week's visit to New Zealand by the PNG prime minister Peter O'Neill will highlight opportunities to expand links.

The Council says two trade missions to PNG in recent months have paved the way for this week's meetings.

It is planning to bring Mr O'Neill together with major construction companies and the business arms of several Maori iwi.

The Council's chairman, Steven Eagle, says they also want to convey to Mr O'Neill their support to grow PNG exports into New Zealand.

He says New Zealand businesses are willing to undertake joint ventures in PNG.

"It is part of what is required to do business in PNG. We have to have a local partner, a local company at least. So New Zealand firms have proven very good at doing that. So that we have got a number of our members that have established recently, some established companies quite a long time ago and they're managed in a way that is mutually beneficial."
