PNG prisoners told to seek assistance from Correctional Officers

10:29 am on 6 August 2013

Papua New Guinea's Attorney General and Justice Minister, Kerenga Kua, has called on all prisoners in jails throughout the country to seek assistance from Correctional Officers on the operations of the Parole system.

Mr Kua says the parole system, which is operating effectively in PNG, is an avenue for prisoners to be released early after completing a third of their jail term.

But he says prisoners must first demonstrate their ability to reform or rehabilitate themselves while serving their jail sentences and become law abiding citizens when they are released on parole or when they complete their prison terms.

Mr Kua added that prisoners should be encouraged to seek advice of Correctional Officers and the Parole Board on how the parole system works and how to procure an early release.
