Australia transfers asylum seekers to PNG

1:59 pm on 1 August 2013

The first group of asylum seekers sent by Australia to be processed under the new deal with Papua New Guinea has arrived in PNG.

Following the agreement signed between the governments of Australia and PNG last month, all boat people arriving in Australia subsequently found to be refugees will be resettled in PNG.

A group of 40 men, mainly Iranians and Afghans, arrived on Manus island this morning after flying from Christmas Island.

26 asylum seekers were already at the temporary camp at Lombrum in Manus before the group arrived today.

Australia's Immigration Minister Tony Burke says more and more asylum seekers will be flown to PNG in the coming days.

Mr Burke said he had removed women and children from Manus because he didn't think the facilities were up to scratch.

He says facilities are being improved and family groups will be sent there soon.
