Riot charges dropped for another 10 asylum seekers in Nauru

8:45 pm on 30 July 2013

A total of 31 asylum seekers arrested following a riot at the Nauru detention centre nearly two weeks ago have now had the charges against them dropped.

21 were dismissed on Monday and another 10 today.

They had all been charged with rioting and unlawful assembly.

The violent riot destroyed the camp and caused an estimated 55 million US dollars in damages.

A limited number of tents have been erected at the wrecked camp to accommodate the discharged asylum seekers.

The Nauru District Court is progressively laying charges against the remaining asylum seekers, who will remain in police custody until at least next week.
