Indonesian legislators consider further demarcation of Papua region

A legislator in Indonesia says only 30 of 70 areas proposed to become regencies in the provinces of Papua and West Papua would be considered for deliberation by the House of Representatives.

The Antara News agency reports it is also proposed that Papua and West Papua be split into seven provinces.

One Papuan lawmaker, Yorries Raweyai, says only the proposal to promote the status of 30 areas into new autonomous regencies would be discussed.

He says it is up to legislators from Papua and West Papua to push for the acceptance of the proposal.

Mr Raweyai says the changes are likely to be implemented after next year's general elections.
