US military wants to lease 33 acres on Saipan

The United States Air Force will need to lease about 13 hectares of land within and around the Northern Mariana Islands' main airport and seaport for 50 years if it chooses Saipan as its alternative airfield.

Local reports indicate that Saipan is the preferred alternative for a contingency airfield for the US Air Force in the western Pacific, if access to Guam's Andersen Air Force Base is limited or denied.

But some of the land around Saipan International Airport includes historic sites.

Pagan in the territory's northern islands is also being eyed as a US military live-fire training area.
