PNG Electoral Commission likely to declare failed LLG polling

Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commission says it's likely that it will cancel Local Level Government polls in a number of Highlands electorates.

LLG polling is underway at varying stages of the process across PNG's provinces.

However the Commission says that undemocratic and illegal activities in recent days and weeks have jeopardised the theme of free, fair and safe elections.

It says provinces which appear to have experienced serious breaches of elections laws include Southern Highlands, Western Highlands and Jiwaka provinces.

Situation reports from Electoral Commission officers on the ground in these provinces include numerous claims of ballot box theft, destruction of ballot papers and flare-ups of election-related violence.
