Reports from French Polynesia say a huge supermarket owned by a leading businessman, Franck Falletta, has been closed and he has left the territory.

Last week, Mr Falletta, who is also the leader of the small Te Ara Tia Party, was detained for a day but let go without any charges being laid.

Reports say the newly opened supermarket in Punaauia is closed for maintenance amid claims it has accumulated huge debts.

Staff are reportedly being redeployed at Mr Falletta's other supermarkets in Tahiti.
